MOVEMENT & EXERCISE

Movement is one of the most important and fundamental indicators of health; health, performance and life all improve with the ability to move freely and confidently at every age. Movement Literacy is about building the skills, knowledge and behaviors necessary for the foundation of a lifetime of movement and optimal performance. It is the holistic learning that occurs through movement and physical activity and integrates physical, psychological, social and cognitive skills.

ARE YOU MOVING WELL?
ARE YOU MOVING RIGHT?

Surprisingly, many people aren’t getting enough movement in their day and don’t realize it. They may be shifting their weight to accommodate an old injury, and over time this affects their muscular skeletal structure and suddenly they’re dealing with persistent back pain or worse. Many very fit runners are surprised to discover this deficit in movement when, after a weekly routine of running 6 days a week, they strain their Achilles. Movement relies on Balance. In fact, balance is the most fundamental and universal movement for all humans.

Why is this so important? Stand on one leg. Can you stay that way for 20 seconds? In a 2014 study published in the journal Stroke, nearly 1,400 men and women tried to balance on one leg for 60 seconds. Researchers then performed MRI scans of their brains. The results suggested that people who could not break the 20 second barrier had higher incidences of reduced cognitive function, microbleeding in the brain, and small lacunar infarctions, a minor stroke that is sometimes undetected.
